Bringing home a new puppy is thrilling — and a lot less stressful when you’re prepared. This golden retriever puppy checklist covers everything we wish we’d had ready before each of our three goldens arrived, from the true essentials to the nice-to-haves. Use this golden retriever puppy checklist to shop smart, avoid last-minute panic runs to the store, and give your new family member a calm, safe first week.

The Essential Golden Retriever Puppy Checklist

These are the non-negotiables — have them ready before your puppy walks through the door:

Food & bowls: a quality large-breed puppy food (ideally the same brand the breeder used, to avoid stomach upset) and sturdy, tip-proof stainless steel bowls. Crate: sized for an adult golden with a divider so it grows with your puppy. Collar, ID tag & leash: an adjustable collar for a fast-growing neck. Bed: a washable, chew-resistant one to start.

Puppy-Proofing and Potty Supplies

Goldens explore with their mouths, so safety matters. Add to your golden retriever puppy checklist: an enzyme cleaner for accidents, potty pads if you’re using them, a baby gate or two to limit access, and cord protectors for exposed wires. Walk through your home at puppy height and remove anything chewable, toxic, or swallowable before day one.

Grooming and Health Basics

Start good habits early. You’ll want a soft slicker brush, dog-safe shampoo, nail clippers or a grinder, a toothbrush and dog toothpaste, and a supply of any parasite prevention your vet recommends. Getting your puppy used to gentle handling now makes grooming easy for life.

Toys and Enrichment

A bored golden puppy is a destructive one. Stock a few durable chew toys for teething, a puzzle or treat-dispensing toy, and a soft fetch toy. Rotating a small set keeps things interesting without overwhelming your puppy.

Before the Big Day

Finally, book a first vet appointment, find a puppy training class, and decide on house rules as a family so everyone is consistent from day one. A little planning turns a chaotic first week into a joyful one.
