Nail and paw care is an easily overlooked part of Golden Retriever grooming, but overgrown nails cause real pain and posture problems, and the paws take a beating from walks, water, and weather. A little routine care keeps your Golden comfortable and mobile.
Nail Trimming
- If you hear nails clicking on the floor, they’re too long
- Trim every 3–4 weeks, taking small amounts to avoid the quick (the blood vessel inside the nail)
- On light nails the quick is a pink area; on dark nails, trim thin slices until you see a grey/black dot
- Keep styptic powder on hand in case you nick the quick
- Don’t forget the dewclaws higher on the inner leg — they don’t wear down naturally
Paw Pad Care
- Check pads for cracks, cuts, or embedded grit after walks
- Hot pavement burns pads — do the 5-second hand test before summer walks
- In winter, rinse off salt and de-icers, which irritate and are toxic if licked
- Trim the fur between the pads, which mats and traps debris and moisture
Making It Stress-Free
Goldens can be sensitive about their feet. Handle paws often from puppyhood, pair trims with treats, and do a few nails at a time rather than forcing all four feet at once. Patience now saves years of struggle.
Bottom line
Trim every few weeks without hitting the quick, protect pads from heat and salt, and keep the paw fur tidy. If nails are severely overgrown or you’re nervous, a groomer or vet can help.
