Golden Retriever Shedding: How to Manage the Coat & Deshed

Golden Retrievers shed — a lot. They have a water-repellent double coat that sheds moderately year-round and heavily during two seasonal “coat blows” in spring and fall. You can’t stop shedding (it’s healthy and normal), but consistent grooming controls 90% of the fur around your home.

The Double Coat

A soft insulating undercoat sits beneath a longer protective topcoat. During seasonal changes the undercoat releases in clumps. Never shave a Golden — the double coat regulates temperature and protects skin; shaving can permanently damage regrowth.

Grooming Routine

  • Brush 3–4x per week (daily during coat-blow season) with a slicker brush
  • Use an undercoat rake or deshedding tool to pull loose undercoat before it lands on your floor
  • Bathe every 6–8 weeks — a bath + thorough blow-dry releases huge amounts of loose fur at once
  • Feed omega-3s; a healthy coat sheds less and breaks less

When Shedding Is a Red Flag

Patchy bald spots, itching, redness, or dull brittle fur can signal allergies, parasites, or thyroid issues — see a vet rather than assuming it’s normal.

Bottom line

Regular brushing and a good deshed during seasonal blows keep it manageable. Embrace the lint roller — and never shave the coat.
