That gorgeous double coat is a Golden Retriever’s signature — and its biggest grooming commitment. Good Golden Retriever coat care keeps shedding manageable, prevents painful mats, and lets the coat do its job of regulating temperature. The trick is doing the right things on the right schedule.
Brushing: the most important step
Brush 2–3 times a week (daily during the heavy spring and fall “blowouts”). Use an undercoat rake or slicker brush to reach the dense undercoat where loose hair and mats form. Regular brushing removes far more shed hair than bathing ever will, and prevents the mats that hide behind the ears, under the legs, and around the tail.
Bathing: less often than you’d think
Bathe every 4–6 weeks, or when genuinely dirty. Over-bathing strips the coat’s natural oils and dries the skin. Use a dog-specific shampoo, rinse thoroughly, and — most importantly — dry the coat completely, including the dense undercoat, to prevent damp-skin infections and hot spots.
Never shave a Golden
It’s tempting in summer, but the double coat insulates against heat as well as cold and shields the skin from sunburn. Shaving can permanently damage how the coat grows back. Manage heat with brushing, shade, and water instead. A quick tidy of the paw and ear feathering is fine; a full shave is not.
