Golden retriever allergies signs and management concept

Golden Retriever allergies are one of the breed’s most common health complaints. If your Golden is constantly scratching, licking its paws, or getting recurring ear infections, an allergy is often the hidden cause — and treating the itch without finding the trigger rarely works.

Common signs of allergies in Goldens

  • Itchy skin — scratching, rubbing on furniture, or biting at the skin
  • Paw licking — often stained brown from saliva
  • Recurring ear infections — Goldens’ floppy ears are especially prone
  • Red, inflamed skin or hot spots, sometimes with hair loss

The three main triggers

1. Environmental (atopy) — pollen, dust mites, mold. Often seasonal, and Goldens are genetically predisposed. 2. Food — usually a protein source (chicken, beef); shows up as year-round itching and sometimes digestive upset. 3. Fleas — a single flea bite can trigger intense itching in a sensitive dog.

How to manage it

Keep up year-round flea prevention first — it removes the easiest cause. For food allergies, a vet-guided elimination diet (a novel protein for 8–12 weeks) is the only reliable test. For environmental allergies, regular bathing, wiping paws after walks, and omega-3 supplements help, and your vet can prescribe medication for flare-ups. Because the treatment depends entirely on the trigger, a proper diagnosis saves time and money.
